A domain name server (DNS) is a computer on the Internet that helps to translate domain names into IP addresses. Without it web sites could not be found when typed into a browser.
If you are about to transfer your website to another hosting provider, i.e. to point it to a different server on the Internet, which requires a change of your domain name’s name servers as well, you should know that all the services related to the resolution of your domain name will go offline. This means that your website, email and FTP connection will be disabled until the name server update propagates worldwide. This process usually takes about 24 hours.
In order to avoid any additional downtime, it is strongly recommended that you have a copy of your website on the new hosting server, so that as soon as the DNS change takes effect, you will have your website online.
